First Aid Training in Township and Rural Areas

First aid can make a difference between pain and comfort, disability and recovery, and life and death. However, in South Africa not everyone has access to first aid training, equipment, or services, especially in townships and rural areas where hospitals and clinics are located far away. This is where A Village At A Time rural development agency bridges the gap. Services offered include:

  • First Aid Training for local unemployed youth.
  • Providing stipends for the trained youth.
  • Providing the trained youth with First Aid tools and Cellphones so that they can be a point of contact for any emergency situation needing First Aid.
  • Spearheading Community awareness campaigns regarding the services.

Snake Bite Awareness and Training

South Africa has around 250 poisonous snakes and Snakebites can be serious and sometimes life-threatening and require swift and appropriate treatment. Snakebite poisoning is a potentially life threatening condition that results from venom being injected through bite or sprayed into the eyes by spitting snakes. Snakebite poisoning is particularly an important health problem in rural areas of the country where communities depend on agriculture for survival. In remote rural areas; health centers are normally far with limited transportation and poor networks for communication. Training:

  • Spider Bite and Scorpion Sting First Aid Treatment
  • Snake Identification
  • Prevention of Snakebite
  • First Aid for Snakebite

Based on the 1996 World Food Summit, food security is defined when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.

The aim of the ‘Village Garden Fresh’ program is to promote and improve nutrition and health of rural women and family backyard and subsistence farming. Through the program; Rural and township women are trained on new farming and agro-processing techniques and methods and mentored to enhance their knowledge and maximize their produce. The backyard farmers are provided with a ‘farming starter pack’ consisting of a wheelbarrow, farming tools, PPE, Seeds and other inputs.

The women are encouraged to cultivate seasonal crops throughout the year for consumption, exchange and selling on behalf of the beneficiaries. SME farmers are supported in Compliance, Funding and Market Access.

South Africa is facing a plastic pollution problem, with a significant amount of plastic ending up in the country’s waterways and oceans.

We endeavour develop and implement community and school education program around subjects of plastic recycling. The program entails the following:

  • Recycling Awareness in both Rural and Township communities
  • Recruiting unemployed youth to collect and deliver plastic bottles to the recycling workshop where they are paid per weight of product.
  • Crushing the plastic bottles to produce plastic pellets that are used to produce plastic items such as plastic cups, hangers and other plastic products.

Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.
